How Many Sheets Are on a Toilet Roll?

The short answer: there’s no standard number. In 11 listings for rolls sold by UK supermarkets, which we checked on 21 October 2026, standard rolls had 157–220 sheets. Rolls sold as “double” rolls or with labels such as “4 = 8” had 252–440. Every Master Roll has 300 sheets. Because counts, sheet sizes and ply all vary, compare packs by the price per 100 sheets, not the price per roll.

Toilet roll packs are surprisingly hard to compare. A 9-roll pack can hold fewer sheets than a 4-roll pack of double rolls, and a thick roll isn’t always a long one. Here’s what UK rolls typically hold, how sheet size and ply fit in, and a quick way to work out which pack gives you the most paper for your money.

How many sheets are on a UK toilet roll?

Each brand and range sets its own sheet count, and some listings only give an “average” figure. These are the ranges we found in 11 listings for household toilet rolls sold by UK supermarkets, checked on 21 October 2026:

Type of rollListings checkedSheets per roll
Standard 2-ply3170–220
Standard 3-ply4157–170
Sold as “double” or “equals” rolls (e.g. “4 = 8”), 2-ply2400–440
Sold as “double” or “equals” rolls (e.g. “6 = 9”), 3-ply2252–320

Two things stand out. Ply doesn’t predict the sheet count: standard 2-ply and 3-ply rolls overlapped. And labels such as “double roll” or “4 = 8” aren’t a fixed measure, because the larger rolls we found ranged from 252 to 440 sheets. So check the number of sheets printed on the pack. These figures are a snapshot of one day’s listings, not a survey of every roll on sale.

How many sheets are in a pack?

Multiply the number of rolls by the sheets per roll. Using rolls from the same listings:

PackRolls × sheets per rollSheets in the pack
9 standard rolls9 × 157 to 9 × 2201,413–1,980
4 “double” rolls sold as “4 = 8”4 × 400 to 4 × 4401,600–1,760
Master Roll, 24 rolls24 × 3007,200
Master Roll, 48 rolls48 × 30014,400

So a 9-roll pack of 160-sheet rolls (1,440 sheets) holds fewer sheets than a 4-roll pack of 400-sheet double rolls (1,600 sheets).

How big is a toilet roll sheet?

Where the listings gave a sheet size (we re-checked one on the retailer’s own site on 26 October 2026), sheets were 118–124 mm long and 101–114 mm wide: roughly 12 cm by 10–11 cm. That’s a fairly narrow spread. The biggest sheet in our sample (118 × 114 mm) had about 10% more area than the smallest (121 × 101 mm).

Some packs give a roll length as well as a sheet count. In the listings, roll lengths ran from 18.5 m on a standard roll to about 54 m on a double roll. The two figures are linked:

  • Roll length = sheets per roll × sheet length. For example, 170 sheets × 124 mm = 21.08 m, and 220 sheets × 121 mm = 26.62 m. Both match the roll lengths their listings gave.
  • Sheets per roll = roll length ÷ sheet length. If a pack shows the roll length and sheet length but not the count, you can work it out yourself.

Does ply change the number of sheets?

No. Ply is the number of layers in each sheet, not the number of sheets on the roll. A 2-ply sheet is two thin layers of tissue joined together; a 3-ply sheet is three. In one supermarket range we checked, the 2-ply and 3-ply rolls had exactly the same count and size: 170 sheets of 124 × 105 mm.

Extra plies and embossing make a sheet thicker, so the size of a roll on the shelf is a poor guide to how many sheets it holds. Our guide to how toilet paper is made explains how plies are combined and embossed.

How many sheets are on a Master Roll?

Master Roll is 3-ply bamboo toilet paper with 300 sheets on every roll. Both packs hold the same roll, so the 24-roll pack has 7,200 sheets and the 48-roll pack has 14,400.

How to work out the price per 100 sheets

You need three numbers from the pack: the price, the number of rolls and the sheets per roll.

  1. Total sheets = number of rolls × sheets per roll
  2. Price per 100 sheets = pack price ÷ total sheets × 100
  3. Price per roll = pack price ÷ number of rolls (a fair comparison only between rolls with the same sheet count)

Here’s the calculation for Master Roll’s two packs at their prices on 21 October 2026:

Pack24 rolls48 rolls
Pack price£23.99£34.99
Total sheets24 × 300 = 7,20048 × 300 = 14,400
Price per 100 sheets£23.99 ÷ 7,200 × 100 = about 33.3p£34.99 ÷ 14,400 × 100 = about 24.3p
Price per roll£23.99 ÷ 24 = about £1.00£34.99 ÷ 48 = about 72.9p

At these prices, the 48-roll pack costs about 27% less per sheet than the 24-roll pack. Buying the same 14,400 sheets as two 24-roll packs would cost £47.98, which is £12.99 more. Prices can change, so check the product page for today’s price.

Why the price per roll can mislead

Here’s an example with made-up numbers (not real products):

ExamplePack APack B
Rolls × sheets per roll12 × 160 = 1,920 sheets6 × 400 = 2,400 sheets
Pack price£4.80£5.40
Price per roll40p90p
Price per 100 sheets25p22.5p

Pack B costs more than twice as much per roll, but less per sheet, because each of its rolls holds two and a half times as many sheets. The price per 100 sheets shows the real difference.

How to compare toilet roll packs fairly

  1. Count sheets, not rolls. Multiply the rolls by the sheets per roll, using the number printed on the pack rather than “double”, “mega” or “4 = 8” labels.
  2. Work out the price per 100 sheets for each pack, as above.
  3. Check the sheet size. If sizes are very different, compare the price per metre instead: pack price ÷ (rolls × roll length in metres). In the listings we checked, sheet area varied by up to about 10%, so the price per 100 sheets gets you most of the way.
  4. Note the ply. A 2-ply and a 3-ply sheet are different products, so decide which you prefer, then compare like with like.
  5. Don’t assume the biggest pack is the cheapest per sheet. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found examples, including toilet roll, where larger packs had a higher unit price than smaller ones.
  6. Check the unit on the price label. One listing we checked gave its unit price per roll (“each”). The CMA found that different units for the same type of product made like-for-like comparison hard, so convert every pack to the same unit.
  7. Add delivery if you’re buying online and it isn’t free.

Price is only one part of the choice. Our guide on how to choose eco-friendly toilet paper covers fibre, bleaching and packaging too.

Frequently asked questions

How many sheets are on a double roll?

There’s no fixed number. The rolls we found sold as “double” rolls or with labels such as “4 = 8” had between 252 and 440 sheets. These labels, like “mega”, aren’t a standard measure, so check the sheet count on the pack and compare the price per 100 sheets.

How many sheets are in a pack of 9 toilet rolls?

It depends on the roll. The five 9-roll packs of standard rolls in our listings had 157–220 sheets a roll, so between 1,413 and 1,980 sheets in the pack. Multiply the rolls by the sheets per roll printed on the pack to get the exact figure.

How long is a toilet roll?

In the UK listings we checked, roll lengths ranged from 18.5 m on a standard roll to about 54 m on a double roll. To check a pack’s figures, multiply the sheets per roll by the sheet length: 170 sheets of 124 mm make a roll 21.08 m long.

How long will a pack of toilet roll last?

It depends on how many sheets your household uses, and we haven’t found a reliable UK figure for that. To work it out for your home, divide the sheets in the pack by the sheets you use a day. For example, if your household used 50 sheets a day (a made-up figure), a 7,200-sheet pack would last 144 days.

Is 3-ply better value than 2-ply?

Ply alone can’t tell you. It describes the layers in each sheet, not how many sheets you get, how big they are or what they cost. Decide which ply you prefer, then compare packs of that ply by the price per 100 sheets, and check the sheet size too.

Why do some packs give an “average” sheet count?

Some listings describe the sheet count as an average, which suggests it can vary a little from roll to roll. It’s still the best figure for comparing packs. If a pack also gives the roll length and sheet length, you can use them to cross-check the count.

Does the same method work for tissues?

Yes. Our bamboo car tissues come in 12 paper tubes of 50 tissues, so 600 in a pack. At £14.99 on 21 October 2026, that’s £14.99 ÷ 600 × 100 = about £2.50 per 100 tissues. Compare facial tissues with other facial tissues, though, not with toilet roll.
